What is laryngopharyngeal reflux?
When stomach acid refluxes into the esophagus, it's called gastroesophageal reflux. However, when stomach acid refluxes into the throat, meaning stomach contents (refluxate) flow back to the esophagus into the throat and vocal cords, irritating the tissues around the throat and causing discomfort or inflammation, it's called laryngopharyngeal reflux. However, the throat and vocal cords are far more sensitive to stomach acid than the esophagus, so even small amounts of stomach acid can cause inflammation and damage, but not necessarily a burning sensation. This means many people are unaware they have laryngopharyngeal reflux because symptoms like hoarseness, chronic cough, or a feeling of something stuck in the throat are similar to those of other illnesses such as allergies or colds.
